Manufacturing Gives Clues About Good Hiring Practices

Manufacturing WEBManufacturing processes are consistent and produce quality products. Manufacturing processes meet specific requirements - consistently. A recent study cited in Inc. suggests that organizations that practice specific hiring practices are more successful.

Establishing standards is the foundation of quality. Job analysis plays a big role in establishing standards. How will employees know what targets they are supposed to achieve? How will managers know when a candidate has met the right criteria in order to put the right person in the right job? How will the organization know if jobs are meeting quality standards that customers demand?

Make it standard practice to both participate in and hold job fairs on a regular basis.

While there is no law stating that jobs must be posted internally, doing so helps retain employees as they feel valued and that their voice will be heard. Ensure that you are posting the job externally to multiple yet targeted markets. Ensure that your postings contain pertinent and clear information to help reach the right people for the job

Interviewing standards help eliminate or at least reduce biases and discrimination in hiring. At the minimum, basics should be known, such as illegal questions not to ask, behavioral interviewing techniques, and questions about tasks pertinent to the position.

If you use tools such as assessments in your screening process, ensure that they meet validity, reliability, and scientific standards, and apply them consistently.

Make your onboarding process thorough. Giving your new hires all the information they need, having their work stations ready for them to begin work sends a strong message that consistent quality standards are important to your organizational culture. Onboarding should be participated in across the board, not just front line employees.

Putting these standards in place will ensure that your hiring process runs just as well as good manufacturing techniques with reliability, consistency, and that your organization meets high quality standards. Doing so will help eliminate lost productivity, expenses, and legal issues.
